Fábio Rosa is the Founder and Executive Director of IDEAASWellington Nogueira is the creator of Doutores da Alegria (Doctors of Joy).   Mr. Rosa and Mr. Nogueira will speak on November 11, 2006 in the Betty Ford Classroom #1110, School of Public Policy.

The seminar will begin at 4:30; please note that there will not be a reception following.  In place of the reception, we will be holding a student lunch.  Seating is limited so if you would like to be included in this lunch, please contact Kristen Roy at royk@umich.edu.

Fábio Rosa founded both a for-profit corporation -- Agroelectric System of Appropriate Technology (STA) -- and a not-for-profit organization -- the Institute for Development of Natural Energy and Sustainability (IDEAAS).

Through STA and IDEAAS, Rosa has been working to bring electricity and community development to rural Brazil since the early 1980s using a combination of non-profit and business approaches to reach the largest possible number of people, including the very poor. IDEAAS creates and demonstrates models of self-sustainable development for low-income rural populations by focusing on the use of high-efficiency and low-cost technologies in the fields of renewable energy and agricultural science. STA has been one of the leading companies in Brazil spreading the use of solar energy and managed grazing systems.

Wellington Nogueira created an organization devoted to bringing happiness into the lives of children in hospitals through the dramatic art of clowning. Through his program he strives to give this form of artistic expression a predominantly social character in an effort to humanize Brazilian hospitals.

This initiative brings academics, practitioners, and others to the University of Michigan to discuss various aspects of social enterprise.  For more information about this or future speaker series events, please contact Kristen Roy at royk@umich.edu.
