Social Enterprise on Film: Access to Global Healthcare through Microfranchising

The William Davidson Institute and Ross School of Business will host PBS’s newshour “NOW” and the subjects of its Emmy Award nominated 2007 “Health Care Franchise” story on December 5, 2007.  The event will be held at 4:30 pm, Wyly Hall Room W0750, Ross School of Business, with a reception to follow.

CFW Shops is a nonprofit healthcare organization launching franchise health shops in Kenya. Students will learn about franchise modeling as applied to social enterprise from company representatives, and how the public television organization PBS got interested in social enterprise from the story’s producers.  Sponsored by the William Davidson Institute in partnership with Arts Enterprise @ Michigan.

Scott Hillstrom
Volunteer Chairman and CEO
The HealthStore Foundation

Scott Hillstrom is a U.S. based entrepreneur and business/legal advisor.  Prior to co-founding The HealthStore Foundation, Mr. Hillstrom served for 10 years as the volunteer President of Steiger International, a youth evangelism ministry spun out of YWAM.  After practicing business law as Managing Partner of Hillstrom & Bale, Ltd., in the 1980's, he became co-founder and Managing Director of Rehab One, Inc., a multi-state network of hospital-based medical clinics in the 1990's.  Since then, he has advised and invested in businesses in the fields of computer networking, software, live entertainment, intellectual property and others in the U.S., Europe and New Zealand.  Presently, Mr. Hillstrom is 'of counsel' to the law firm of Hellmuth & Johnson in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  He also serves as Managing Director of Premier Mounts, a distributor of mounting devices for flat panel displays and digital projectors based in Anaheim, California, and on the Advisory Board of Wet cement Productions, an animated production company based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Dan Logan
Producer, NOW on PBS

Dan Logan has been at the weekly newsmagazine NOW on PBS (formerly NOW with Bill Moyers) since its inception in the fall of 2001.  After serving as Bill Moyers’ researcher, he has produced segments examining the intersection of faith and politics in America, the legal status of the detainees held at Guantanamo Bay, the working poor, Spanish-language literacy, voter suppression, security at nuclear power plants, and the plight of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with post-traumatic stress disorder, among other topics.  This past spring, he traveled to Kenya with host David Brancaccio to produce NOW’s inaugural piece for its Enterprising Ideas series on social entrepreneurship, “Health Care Franchise,” which was nominated for a 2007 Business and Financial Emmy Award.  Dan holds a BA in history from Yale University.

 

Jennie Amias
Speical Projects Producer, NOW on PBS

Jennie Amias has worked in the documentary field for the past 7 years on a diverse range of projects ranging from BBC’s feature documentary “The Trials of Henry Kissinger” to PBS’ acclaimed series “American Masters.” Before joining NOW on PBS as Special Projects Producer in January of this year, she produced “No End in Sight” which won a Special Jury Prize at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival.  Jennie was educated at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, in Jerusalem, Israel.

 

Joyce Rukungu
Owner and Operator of Vision CFWClinic

Joyce Rukungu is a Kenya Registered Nurse who owns and operates a CFWShop Clinic in Manyatta District, and area of central Kenya.  Prior to joining CFWShops in 2004, Joyce operated a private clinic.  Operating without the backing of a franchise network made procuring medicine and offering consistent service difficult.  Her thriving CFWShop Clinic now serves three village areas, with a total community outreach of 12,000 people, the majority of whom are farmers.  Joyce is married with four daughters.
