Conference On Resources Management A First In Jordan
Thursday, November 05, 2009

WDI's Development Consulting Services, along with several partners in Jordan, is organizing the first international conference on natural resources management in that country.

The conference, "Integrated Natural Resources Management in Jordan," will take place Nov. 10 on the campus of the Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST). In addition to WDI, the conference is sponsored by JUST, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Higher Education for Development (HED), and the Jordan River Foundation.

The aim of the conference is to address integrated natural resources management by gathering all the stakeholders and decision makers to discuss why it is important for the sustainability of the ecosystem.

Natural resources and the ecosystem have been damaged by world population growth and increasing demands for food, feed, and energy. The result is a pressing need to develop and adopt an integrated approach for managing the natural resources to achieve more balanced and sustainable ecosystem.

Topics such as management of water and wastewater, soil quality, and land degradation will be discussed.

The Jordan Government, HED, and USAID funded the JEWEL (Jordan Education for Water and Environmental Leadership) project in 2007. The project is implemented by WDI, JUST, and the Jordan River Foundation.

The main aim of this project is to develop leaders at all levels in the public, private and community sectors who understand how to use and develop new decision-support tools for natural resources management. Click here to read about WDI's work in Jordan.

The project has developed a Masters of Science degree in Integrated Natural Resources Management to train future leaders in applied nature resources management. Currently there are 14 graduate student enrolled in the program taking courses and working on various aspects on integrated natural resources management.

The JEWEL project also developed modules to train mid-level private and public sectors leaders who are dedicated to empowering women studying natural resources management. Several in-service training workshops have already been implemented at different locations in Jordan. Decision makers, representatives of local communities, NGO`s, women sectors and investors were brought together to organize a dialogue and discussion on NRM leaded by professors from JUST.
