The William Davidson Institute at the University of Michigan has spent the past 14 years teaching management skills to corporations, nonprofits and entrepreneurs in foreign countries with transitional and emerging market economies.  But the institute’s newest contract, which begins today in the formerly worn-torn African country of Rwanda, will target, among others, a new set of students — the country’s top 100 government employees.   “There’s a real lack of management talent there,” said Robert Kennedy, executive director of the institute and professor of business administration at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at UM.

Michigan Radio’s Jack Lessenberry interviewed WDI Executive Director Robert Kennedy about the Institute’s two projects in Rwanda. The piece aired Sept. 5.
Lessenberry, who contributes essays and interviews to the radio station, also recorded his thoughts on the project, Rwanda’s history and what the United States role should be in assisting the former war-torn nation.

WDI's project with the Government of Rwanda is detailed in an article in The New Times, Rwanda's leading newspaper. WDI has started a training program for senior government ministers and has begun working with the School of Finance and Banking in Kigali.

Detroit Free Press columnist Tom Walsh wrote about WDI's upcoming work in Rwanda. Walsh interviewed WDI Executive Director Robert Kennedy and Professor Rob Pasick, who will lead the first training sessions of Rwanda government ministers.

Saying a "Lack of training is a cancer that threatens the national fabric and hampers service delivery of countries," Rwanda's Minister of Public Service and Labour announced that WDI would provide training sessions for top government officials. The first training session begins Sept. 4. The comments of Prof. Manasseh Nshuti were in an Aug. 4 article in The New Times, Rwanda's leading newspaper. He said the training would improve smooth management and build internal administration capacity.

WDI's Davidson Data Center and Network (DDCN) was mentioned in a January 24 article in the Financial Times.
DDCN has two main components: a data locator and a data archive. They are both integrated into a fully searchable database and presented under the same user friendly interface. The goal of the project is to preserve and make widely available micro and macro data from transition and emerging markets as well as to facilitate the uncovering of the existing data sets. Chinese appliance maker Haier has put in a bid to buy Maytag while the Chinese National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC) has put an offer on Unocal.

When the William Davidson Institute first came together, the Berlin Wall had just fallen apart.

Affiliated with the University of Michigan Business School, the institute was launched with an ambitious mission of educating business leaders in Soviet -era countries as their homelands traveled the bumpy road from communist to market-driven economies. The Ann Arbor nonprofit,
known as the WDI, has sent hundreds of students and dozens of professors to conduct research and instruct executives across eastern and central Europe, as well as Russia.



May 2, 2004

Robert E. Kennedy, an expert on business strategy and industrial dynamics in emerging economies, became executive director of the William Davidson Institute (WDI) at the University of Michigan Business School on May 1.

Kennedy, who joined the Business School in September as a professor of business administration and as the associate director of WDI, succeeded Jan Svejnar, who returned to teaching full time at the Business School.
