IDEAAS
Porto Alegre – RS - Brazil
Founded in 1997 by social entrepreneur Fábio Rosa, IDEEAS works on sustainable development and environmental conservation initiatives in Brazil's rural areas.
The mission of IDEAAS is to develop, install and demonstrate models for sustainable development to rural low-income populations, using high efficiency and low cost technologies in the fields of renewable energy and agronomic science.
Currently, 2 billion people (1/3 of the world’s population) have no access to electricity. Energy access is a basic component of improved living conditions and income generation. Neither governments nor utility companies have offered adequate solutions for this problem in Brazil, but Fábio Rosa was able to develop a sustainable model to bring electricity to this population.
His model is based in the leasing and maintenance of solar equipment, including panels, cables and battery. This model provides people in isolated areas access to electricity at very low cost, it is less costly for suppliers, and the leasing system bypasses Brazil’s high sales taxes of 50% by not selling the equipment.
IDEAAS focuses its energies in the following areas:
- Social business models
- Rural electrification and renewable energy
- Income generation and productive use of energy
- Development of social processes
- Management of local biodiversity for income generation
- Forest production with native species
- Public policies
- Appropriate technologies
The models developed and implemented by IDEAAS benefit thousands of people in Brazil. Some of their models have been referenced in national and international programs, and are starting to be replicated throughout the world.
