The WDI Global Impact Internship Program supports partnerships between University of Michigan graduate students and businesses and non-profits in emerging market economies. The objective of the program is to provide students with international business experience, and to provide partner organizations with the benefit of student expertise and assistance.
WDI has three areas of research interest:
· Globalization of Services,
· Market-based approaches to poverty alleviation at the Base of the Pyramid, and
· Social Enterprise.
Proposed projects addressing any of these areas will be given precedence.
Intern Qualifications
Applicants must be enrolled in a master’s level degree program. Recent (April 2008) master’s level graduates who are interested in international summer work experience are also encouraged to apply. Ideal candidates must also show:
· Commitment to the Davidson Institute mission
· Excellent academic and professional record
· Cultural sensitivity
· Ability to work with managers and employees operating in a different cultural and business environment
· Ability to build relationships
· Strong initiative
· Creative problem solving
· Previous international development or business experience and knowledge of a foreign language are desirable, but not required.
This year WDI will again offer two types of Global Impact Internships: the student-initiated and the WDI initiative-driven.
-
Student-Initiated Global Impact Internships will be with organizations identified by the applicants that are doing innovative work in emerging market economies, such as development-oriented NGOs. Applicants are responsible for contacting the organization, co-defining the opportunity, and obtaining a written commitment from the sponsor before submitting a proposal to WDI. Proposals focusing on international social enterprise, base of the pyramid, or globalization of services are encouraged. WDI will award up to $10,000 and up to $1500 reimbursement for travel to/from the internship location.
