STUDENT-INITIATED INTERNSHIPS
Student-initiated internships allow students to choose and mold their own summer internships.
To apply for the Student-Initiated WDI Global Impact Internship, please submit the following:
· Web-based application form (not activated yet)
· Up-to-date resume.
· 2 to 3-page statement-of-interest. The statement should be a brief proposal which identifies the organization and the Project Supervisor, describes the nature and scope of work, impact and outcomes (for both the student and the host), any relevant experience, and why your proposal should be selected for funding.
· A letter of commitment from the host organization, describing the project scope and objectives, designation of a Project Supervisor/Contact, and support for the internship (financial or in-kind).
· A budget which outlines expected costs, as well as funding from other sources. Outside support is strongly encouraged, but not required. Please include supporting information to justify your budget request (examples include, but are not limited to: airfare quote, cost of living (rent, meals, transportation expense)s from host organization or internet sources (include websites), immunizations price list from a health provider, etc.
Note that a budget without supporting quotes and sources will not be accepted.

The complete application package is due on Friday, January 8, 2010 by 5pm.
How to Submit Your Application Package
- Fill in the web-based Application Form and submit online.
- Email your resume, statement of interest, letter of commitment from host organization, and budget as individual attachments to WDI-Internships@umich.edu.
- Put “Last Name – 2010 Student-Initiated Internships” in the subject field of your email.
- Applications are due by 5pm on Friday, January 8, 2010.
- Applicants of self-initiated internships will receive an email notice by Friday Jan. 22.
- Students accept and commit by Friday Jan. 29, 2010.
- Interns are expected to attend a mandatory orientation. Date and time are TBD.
- Internships are expected to occur from mid-May to mid-August 2010, though the exact start and end-dates and the work schedule are directly negotiated between the intern and the host organization.
Students not selected can apply for WDI Initiative-Driven internships.

Around the sixth week, the intern must submit a 2-page update describing any challenges, solutions to those challenges, lessons learned, and if applicable, an updated plan going forward.
- Eligibility: Currently enrolled graduate students who will return for Fall term. Graduated students are not eligible for student-initiated internships.
- Internship length: Internship length are 12 weeks.
- Projects should be scoped to address a particular problem or issue, and the proposal must outline specific expected outcomes.
- WDI will not fund every proposal that is submitted, and accepted proposals may not receive the maximum award.
- The number of applicants and the quality of proposals will impact the number of awards granted.
- Preference will be given to projects with more than one source of funding, including funding by the partner organization.
- Budget: Costs related to housing maintained in Ann Arbor will not be considered for funding.
