Briefly explain what you would like the MBA students to know about your company/organization. Please include the primary function of your business/division.

Aravind is the world leading hospital in eye care with about 225,000 surgeries in 2004 and over 1.4 million patients. Aravind has five hospitals which it owns and operates in southern India. Aravind's mission is to eradicate needless blindness. In addition to its own hospitals, Aravind also offers training and consulting through LAICO. This project is focused on a new method of expanding Aravind's reach: a management contract model in which someone outside of Aravind owns the hospital and Aravind supplies the management.

Please define the project in general terms and how it aligns with the organization’s goals and aspirations.

Aravind is working on the management contract model as growth opportunity to expand eye care in developing countries. Aravind have two locations one at Kolkata and the other at Amethi both are in the northern part of the country. They are sending a team of people from Aravind to work at these locations to both train and develop a work culture. They are also interested in ensuring that the Aravind work culture gets imbibed in these locations. For this Aravind has the entire team working in these hospitals trained at Aravind for a period of three to four months. They are also looking to develop the Aravind brand names in these locations as this will spread our message and the hospital gets identified with the Aravind model effectively. They need to take up steps to ensure that the culture and the branding go together.

What process steps do you expect the MAP team to take when conducting project research?

The Ross team will begin by gaining some background research and benchmarking some hospitals in the Ann Arbor area who have similar relationships. The team will then fly into the main Aravind hospital in Madurai before going off, in two subteams, to the two hospitals to the north of India.

Please describe your intended goals as well as expected outcomes from this project. Be specific.

(Examples: full market analysis; competitive map for relevant products/services; situational analysis with identified gaps and opportunities; process flow diagram and determination of costs of a proposed process; anticipated ROI to implement new activities; recommendations for staffing a new process)

The team is to work on propagating the right culture and Aravind brand building strategies at these hospitals. Aravind wants the team to develop strategies that will enable to successfully implement them.

Please identify the type of project you are proposing. List more than one if applicable; if none of the following identifies your project adequately, please enter what best describes your project.

Comments:

How much time do you anticipate the MAP team will be away from the Michigan campus throughout the 7-week period?
Please be specific. A minimum of one week (5 days) on-site is expected for projects outside of Southeast Michigan; 2 weeks on-site is the average with up to 5 weeks on-site the maximum allowed. Most local projects ask their MAP team to be on-site at various times throughout the project, much like consultants. When considering travel plans, please keep in mind the project orientation, data collection including interviews, travel to other destinations for trade shows or conferences and final presentation, which can be either on-site, at Michigan’s Ross School in Ann Arbor, or via video/teleconference.
